Dermot O'Connell
Midnight Mass in Dublin 4
Judges Comments
This poem was a delight, one which had many of the qualities and
features of Swift's verse at its most witty and humane. It has,
like so many of Swift's gentler satires, a very clear sense of
drama, and a beautifully controlled handling of a variety of characters.
The central character, Father Jack, is an amusing and vivid element
in this drama, a sympathetic figure because he is presented as
quite lonely and confused. His ironic and sceptical observations
upon many of his well-heeled parishoners are delivered with wonderful
skill through ingenious and often most inventive rhymes - another
hallmark of Swiftian comic verse. This is a subtle and humourous
poem, one which shows great poetic imagination combined with a
high level of technical skill. My congratulations to the author!
