Brian
Lalor
On Publishing; A Rhapsody
Judges Comments
"This
was really quite wonderful, beautifully sustained throughout,
combining a very high level of technical ingenuity, witty and
comic characterisations, and a clear, coherent sense of narrative
right up to the end. This was a virtuoso imitation of one of Swift's
most famous poems, "On Poetry, A Rhapsody", and showed
the writer's detailed and imaginative appreciation of what Swift
was up to in that poem. Swift's original is a satire on Grub Street:
this version is a comic variation upon that theme, now set in
the brutal and demeaning world of Irish commercial publishing.
Perhaps above all, I really liked the 'persona' in the poem, the
character of the author struggling to be published, desperate
and deluded in equal measure." (Professor Joe McMinn - Judge)
